Sometimes though it isn't what you ask but HOW you ask. Saying "I'd like to brainstorm with you on next steps" is better than calling them on the spot. But usually the lead has no issue with saying "let's discuss next steps when our schedules allow" . It's also important to understand that those reviews often have fake criticism in them. The worst possible interpretation of a minor problem in order to have an excuse to not give them a promotion.
