I'm well over 40 and seldom fight over much in person. This has not changed for me ever. I tend to yield to expertise and choose someone who does the same and has complementary knowledge. That makes most everyday things easy. Too many people choose someone who is like themselves in too many ways so they butt heads in areas they'd commonly take charge. It gets messy.

As for distrust, that's a whole other discussion. Men need to work on creating a culture of treating women with respect, even when it’s hard and even when they don’t agree about how women are behaving. That means, honor, kindness and truthful discourse, not naming some women “whores” and others “wife material” and treating the much larger group like trash and blaming them for not reading their minds about it in standards never discussed. And it means not walking by it when they hear a friend or relative has behaved badly.
