I'm not sure that it's a disability as much as a collection of issues. But even if it were, disability is not a light switch.
If you compare just the social part to wearing glasses or being colorblind to more severe difficulties, it's not as tough to look at and understand. Most people don't think twice anymore if someone wears glasses or contacts, and with a little knowledge that Autists can behave and think differently without harming anyone, we can be accepted and loved, and mix in the ways we have ability to mix. Not that long ago, wearing glasses was an admission of weakness and made someone a target. That seems to be less so now, so it can be less so for us.
It seems regardless of neurotype, most people do thrive when they can manage their environment. And it seems like many people feel very taxed from a workday, even if we are more so.
