I would never do it. I didn't grow up anywhere fancy enough to not have a sense of danger! If one friend would even think to ask, I would darn well listen to the idea that I should be cautious. I don't think that's Whiteness alone, that's also location and social class above that.

I had a young and stubborn housemate move in with me in LA, from a lovely Florida location, who refused to lock the darn door until someone came into our driveway by opening a gate, broke his windshied and stole his laptop. It took that much to teach it. He thought locks were decoration, no joke.
