I think you may have scared this lady a bit. She may have felt some danger at being seen as possibly trans when being pegged as either male or female, even wrongly was better than being called a person. I think she was expecting you to say, "This lady here? I think she's OK, but these days it's important to ask permision before bringing a dog close."
