I think people tend to have holes in their recollection. They shouldn't have to be perfect to be treated well. I wouldn't assume that they're telling lies as much as they're POV.

The proxy thing is the truth. If it weren't they'd both still be on the team. I've read most of the book now, it's largely truthful and signs point to them being happy. Everyone will be fine.
