I don't see whiteness in this, but a class difference. Being whiter helps to get that class difference, but I'm not convinced it's a core reason. That doesn't look like a victory sign to me but a peace sign. You wouldn't have been there without peace. It's not a war zone, but a ceasefire border zone inside a fractured country.
