Back then people wanted folks like him (and me) to stay home with our books and dissapear. I don't think going on a ton of interviews would have helped him because people like us didn’t have real economic power yet. Now we're much cooler because we’re interesting and tend to have extra money. I think he did the right thing and I'm happy to hear he did so well in the end.
